Recent results of management and executive development achieved by various executive education providers have been extensively criticized in the last decades. Needs and demand of individual learners and companies as clients have significantly changed due to societal, economic and technological developments. In order to meet these new demands and needs, executive education providers are highly required to move away from traditional classroom trainings which aim at knowledge delivery. Instead, they are called to enable and facilitate sustainable competency development which understands clients' individual problems and challenges as initial point for learning and thus, is able to lead to clear impact for learners as well as clients. Moreover, the education market is currently characterized by high dynamics. This leads to increased competition and innovation pressure for executive education providers and requires innovative learning offerings respectively programs. However, coping with educational innovations still seems to be very challenging for these organizations. The present thesis starts at this point, takes up an educational management perspective and investigates how educational innovations can successfully be implemented into executive education programs. At this current time, there is no such model available - neither in research nor in practice. Following this purpose, success factors for an innovation oriented program management will be identified to develop an empirically based program management model which combines innovation management approaches with process steps of a didactic value creation (educational needs analysis, program design, development, execution and evaluation). For achieving this research goal, an extensive literature analysis is followed by two empirical studies: First, executive education practitioners with responsibilities for programs were questioned regarding their current understanding of educational innovations, that is the assessed relevance of program management activities which can enable these innovations and also their implementation status. On this basis, three innovative executive education programs were investigated in depth through a case study approach aiming at the identification of success factors. After a single case analysis, a cross case analysis made it possible to derive common and excluding supportive action patterns. As central result, an innovation oriented program management model is suggested. Furthermore, recommended actions for practitioners were pointed out. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
