The motivation for this work is founded in the observation that many development projects for analytical information systems either fall short of expectations or are not completed in time or on budget. A major reason for this issue lies in the very specific characteristics of analytical information systems, which vary significantly from those of transaction-oriented systems. Particularities like volatile requirements, heterogeneous user groups and the need for area- or company-wide data integration and usage require very specific method support. For handling volatile requirements traditional software development has yielded agile approaches. The work at hand aims at developing a methodological approach to carry out development projects in the field of analytical information systems both more effectively and efficiently. In order to thoroughly address and rigorously solve the above named challenges Scrum, a widespread agile development method, is adapted to the specifics of the considered projects. Findings from a literature analyses, as well as from successful agile projects are used as inputs. The resulting component-oriented approach allows an adaptation for various development situations. The situations are characterized by means of project types and general conditions such as experience with agile development or use of different types of analytical information systems. Evidence for the method’s practicality and usefulness as well as its rigorous derivation and construction is realized by means of a comprehensive method evaluation. The evaluation is completed both analytically based on previously defined content-related and methodological criteria and empirically through an expert survey. Beginning with problem identification in practice, the subsequent development and application of appropriate methods for project development and the final evaluation of the situational method, this work covers the complete cycle of design research.
