What are the tools and knowledge available to anticipate possible futures? How do these tools and knowledge shape the object they seek to understand? What is the view on the technological promises of the avalanche of data (Big Data)? [27 janvier 2022]: Cycle de conférences Crises, mutations et anticipations : penser les futurs en Sciences humaines et sociales (décembre 2021 à juin 2022), organisé par l’Institut SoMuM - Aix-Marseille Université.Cette deuxième séance était consacrée à l’étude des techniques et des technologies d’anticipation (modélisation, simulation, prospective). Quels sont les outils et les savoirs disponibles pour anticiper les futurs possibles ? Comment ces outils et savoirs façonnent-ils l’objet qu’ils cherchent à connaître ? Quel regard porter sur les promesses technologiques de l’avalanche des données (Big Data) ? Les quatre communications portaient un regard sur les savoirs et technologies mis en œuvre pour « connaître » le futur.

Anticipating the demographic future requires questioning the methods, hypotheses, laws, regularities, terminologies, and implications that accompany and enable conjecture. This presentation sets out some theoretical and historical benchmarks relating to the specific practice of demographers in anticipating future demographic developments. It discusses the main areas where demographic forecasts, prospects and projections are useful and highlights the pitfalls to be avoided. ; Anticiper l’avenir démographique nécessite de s’interroger sur les méthodes, les hypothèses, les lois, les régularités, les terminologies, les implications qui accompagnent et permettent la conjecture. Cette présentation pose quelques repères théoriques et historiques relatifs à la pratique spécifique des démographes pour anticiper les évolutions démographiques futures. Elle aborde les principaux domaines où les prévisions, perspectives et projections démographiques sont utiles et souligne les écueils à éviter.
