Il existe chez les animaux, beaucoup de troubles psychiques qui présentent de grandes ressemblances avec les psychopathologies humaines « fondamentales »: anxiété, dépression, comportements perturbés, « névroses » expérimentales... La question de la conscience permet même de poser celle, chez certains animaux, de modèles de psychoses plus élaborées comme la schizophrénie. La grande leçon philosophique de l'évolutionnisme, en ce qui concerne la psychiatrie, c'est finalement celle de son enracinement dans la continuité de la nature.
