Topic of the essay is the unpublished dissertation of Hans Joachim Iwand; it surveys the origin of Iwand's train of thoughts and his theological arguments essential during this period. The historic background of Iwand's theology is the philosophy of religion of Carl Stange and Rudolf Hermann, both crucial teachers of Iwand. They themselves were influenced by a peculiar handling of Kant's thinking linking the »Dinge an sich« with Schleiermacher's theory of feeling (» Gefühlstheorie «). Stange's and Hermann's view of God's reality and the experience of this reality in the human will - in a purely receiving wholeness of consciousness - form the transition to Iwand's critique of Karl Heim and to his own doctrine of God and of sin. This leads to the christology of Iwand, which he indicates and then elaborates in his work on Luther in 1930.
