According to biocentrism humans have in their actions to take into consideration all living beings. This view is critisized by French philosophers, e.g. by Michel Serres who proposes a contract with nature, but does so exclusively with regard to the survival of humans. He shares this anthropocentric reasonsing with Luc Ferry who polemicizes harshly against the new ecological order which, in his mind, amounts to a regress before the time of modern humanism. For Ferry, humans are rather cultural than natural beings, and they can (and have to) solve the problems of their environment by the use of science and technology. Thus, although these philosophers emphasize that humans have to reflect their relationship to non-human beings, they do not regarded them for their own sake but with regard to human needs.
