The aim of this paper is to show that the reading of what Barthes called the punctum in a photograph is intrinsically related to both the material aspect of the signs and the role of the body in perception and that the answer demanded by the 'stab' caused by the punctum constitutes the ethic dimension of the gaze at the photographic portrait. In order to reveal the perceptual relevance of sign texture and of the body in Barthes' semiological analyses three interconnected verbs (writing, reading and looking) are scrutinized. A common characteristic to these forms of producing sense is revealed as a result of this examination: All three verbs represent types of medial performance in which the body is 'seized' by its surrounding world but approaches it at the same time, impregnating it with signification. Still the punctum is an exception, since it can not be approached, it rather 'perforates' the gaze. The wounded body is forced to react to the injury, it is called on to expose itself. This exposition provoked by the very perception of the punctum can be understood as a gift of the body. The ethical dimension of the gaze does not lie in any specific kind of answer to the photographic portrait, but in the need for an answer at all. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
