While communication may seem to rely on verbal messages, words can become more than mere graphic signs. The subsequent analysis of contemporary US-American prose combining both mainstream American and Mexican-American cultural elements, shows on the one hand that language can carry a deeper meaning which only the cultural context will reveal. On the other hand, words can also conjure up images which may help to understand one's reality or change it to create a new reality. The analysis of the Chicana novel So Far From God aims to prove the thesis that the authorAna Castillo uses language as an instrument of power, thus blurring the boundary between real and imagined, authentic and performed, verbal and visual worlds and the mental frames that go with it.
